South Australia’s new premier has been sworn in.

Peter Malinauskas thanked the “people of South Australia for investing in me their confidence” as he addressed the media for the first time after the weekend’s election saw the Liberals ousted from power after one term.

With Deputy Premier by his side, Mr Malinauskas said it was a “very special moment”.

“I take this responsibility incredibly seriously,” he said, promising to “deliver on our policy”.

He said he wanted to represent people not always represented in parliament, such as those “doing it tough”.

“I want to lead a modern Labor government with the best traditions of getting the balance right between capital and labour,” he said.

He said his first meeting would be with health officials and the Police Commissioner over existing COVID-19 rules in the state.

He said people wanted to know why restrictions were different from other states.

“My preference is to make sure we’re doing the right thing by everybody and the interest of the state,” he said.
